Bishop’s University Canada was founded in 1843 through an Act of Parliament, and a site of 40 acres was chosen, which was donated by Lt. Colonel William Morris.
In 1845, the Reverend Jasper Hume Nicolls was appointed the first principal of the college. He graduated from Oriel College at the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts.
In 1853, along with Bishop Mountain, he was instrumental in obtaining the Royal Charter, which raised the college to the status of a university. He led the Bishop’s on his own for 32 years, surviving several crises.
In the past 150 years, this University has proved to be durable and has made a valuable contribution to the field of literature and science.
