Admission Criteria & Eligibility

A high school diploma or its equivalent may be accepted in place of graduation from secondary school. Students interested in applying are strongly encouraged to pursue a college preparation curriculum that includes art studio and art history classes during their high school years. Studio drawing and other art and design courses are highly suggested. Our Architecture curriculum requires a year of science (ideally physics) and a full year of mathematics (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).

Minimum Scores on Tests:

SAT or ACT

All candidates must present SAT or ACT (American College Testing Program) test scores. The results will be super-scored at RISD. There is no need to take a subject test. RISD's institution code number for the SAT is 3726; for ACT, the code number is 003812.

IELTS or TOEFL

Any candidate whose native language is not English must present evidence of proficiency in either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by one of these tests to be considered for admission to RISD. A score of 93 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS is required. It might take up to six weeks for RISD to get your TOEFL or IELTS scores, so be sure to schedule your tests well in advance. RISD's unique identifier for schools is 3726. 

Rhode Island School of Design Courses

• There are 16 undergraduate majors, 18 graduate majors, a first-year experimental and foundation program, and a graduate certificate program available at Rhode Island School of Design.
• Students can select a specialization area focusing on a topic from across disciplines to further their education.
• Fine arts, graphic design, sculpture, printing, time-based media, photography, painting, and ceramics consistently rank among the most popular majors in universities worldwide.
• Through its Global Exchange program, RISD offers its students the chance to study internationally at one of 43 partner institutions.
• Graduate and undergraduate students can use the college's summer and winter semester foundational-level programs every year. Both on-campus and remote students can participate in these courses.
• Students enrolled in the BRDD program can obtain a Bachelor of Arts (AB) from Brown and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from RISD simultaneously, making it the only program of its sort in the country.
• A Master of Arts in Design and Architecture (MADE) is provided through cooperation between RISD's Architecture Design division and Brown's School of Engineering.
• To be considered for admissions, all master's degree applicants must provide a writing sample demonstrating superior critical and analytical thinking and submit their applications by the end of January.

Every year, students from both RISD and Brown can attend a combined career expo hosted by both schools. The key subjects across which internships are provided are Arts, Graphic Design, Architecture, and Fine Arts. Undergraduates and postgraduates can access the school's many workshops throughout the year.
