Admission Criteria & Eligibility

A high school diploma or its equivalent may be accepted in place of graduation from secondary school. Students interested in applying are strongly encouraged to pursue a college preparation curriculum that includes art studio and art history classes during their high school years. Studio drawing and other art and design courses are highly suggested. Our Architecture curriculum requires a year of science (ideally physics) and a full year of mathematics (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).

Minimum Scores on Tests:

SAT or ACT

All candidates must present SAT or ACT (American College Testing Program) test scores. The results will be super-scored at RISD. There is no need to take a subject test. RISD's institution code number for the SAT is 3726; for ACT, the code number is 003812.

IELTS or TOEFL

Any candidate whose native language is not English must present evidence of proficiency in either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by one of these tests to be considered for admission to RISD. A score of 93 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS is required. It might take up to six weeks for RISD to get your TOEFL or IELTS scores, so be sure to schedule your tests well in advance. RISD's unique identifier for schools is 3726.
