Newfoundland was established as a dominion of the United Kingdom in 1907. Memorial University began as Memorial University College (MUC), which opened its doors on September 25, 1925, at a campus located on Parade Street in St. John’s. MUC was founded to honor those who had given their lives for the allies during World War I and educate students focused on education for religious schools across Newfoundland. The college has been an institution of higher learning ever since and has progressively expanded its population of students, the programs offered, and its campus over the years.
Before that, there was no post-secondary schooling in the dominion with anything like high ranking; undergrads often went to Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States. First-year students were first admitted into a non-degree program in 1925. The actual location on Parade Street in St. Johns was established with help from a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
