What is EVM? The full form of EVM is Electronic Voting Machine. Votes are now recorded using Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). The names of the candidates and the party insignia are shown by the machine. The Election Commission has assigned unique insignia to independent candidates as well. All of the EVMs are sealed and moved to a safe location when the polling is over. After the votes cast for each competitor are collected, the candidate who receives the most votes from a constituency is declared elected on the prearranged day. Voters could cast ballots electronically when electronic voting machines (EVMs) were introduced in India in 1982, which made it easier for the Election Commission of India to count votes.

Key Aspects and Features of Electronic Voting Machines

  • Voters have the option to select individual candidates by pressing a button on electronic voting machines, or EVMs. It has a connection that connects it to an electronic voting box.
  • Its two constituent units are the balloting unit and the control unit. A five-meter wire connects the two of them.
  • The EVM is powered by a single 6-volt alkaline battery installed in the control unit.
  • It even works in locations without electricity.
  • The control unit is housed in the polling officer selected by the Election Commission.
  • Voters can cast secret ballots in the Balloting Unit, located in the voting area, by pressing a button next to the name and signature of the candidate of their choice.

Pros and cons of Electronic Voting Machines:

Pros

Cons

1. Because there is no printing and reduced paper use, it is environmentally benign.   1. Because ballots are physically stored after voting and there is a possibility of manipulation during the time between voting and vote counting, there are security concerns.
2. EVMs are incredibly effective; there are no erroneous votes and quicker vote counting. Installing and using it is simple.  2. There can be technical problems with it. Problems with software might result in errors. In addition, hardware issues could occur if the EVM is not handled carefully.
