What is Naval

Go back

Naval Engineering is a multidisciplinary branch under the broader engineering umbrella that is concerned with aspects such as the design, construction, and maintenance of waterborne mediums of transport. This includes the production and maintenance of passenger ships, cargo ships, submarines, and offshore platforms, in addition to other maritime systems. This is the reason why naval engineering is also referred to as naval architecture.

As a sub-branch under engineering, naval engineering combines several elements from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and electronic engineering, as well as software and safety engineering.

Naval engineering is primarily involved in the design process and construction of various types of marine vessels and systems, ranging from cargo ships and cruise liners to setting up offshore drilling rigs. In addition, it also oversees the development of marine propulsion systems.

Other important aspects of naval engineering also include the integration of communication systems alongside conducting ocean research and gathering data on oceanic activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the scope of Naval Engineering?

As a field that is multidisciplinary in nature, naval engineering is concerned with a wide variety of sub-topics, such as working for the navy, handling shipping and logistics companies, constructing marine vessels, designing marine equipment, and oceanography, in addition to many other topics.

Q. Is Naval Engineering easy to study?

Marine engineering is an extremely specialized sub-topic under engineering and can feel difficult at times as the scope of study is quite vast. As an added fact, however, since most marine engineers end up working in the oceans and seas for months on end, they need to be physically and mentally tough.

Q. Which is the best country to pursue Naval Engineering courses?

Some of the best countries to pursue courses in naval engineering are the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This is not an exhaustive list, however, and there are several other universities and colleges that offer highly regarded naval engineering programs.

Q. Which subject is best for Naval Engineering?

In order to pursue courses in naval engineering, it is important for applying students to have a strong foundation in science and, more importantly, in physics, chemistry, and math. These subjects can prove to be of immense help across different engineering courses.
