What is AAI? The full form of AAI is the Airports Authority of India. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was established on April 1, 1995, by the merger of the National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India, as per a Parliamentary Act. Following the merger, a single organization was established with the duty of developing, enhancing, controlling, and overseeing the nation's airspace and ground-based civil aviation infrastructure.

24 international airports (3 civil enclaves), 10 custom airports (4 civil enclaves), and 103 domestic airports (23 civil enclaves) are among the 137 airports that AAI oversees. Over an area of 2.8 million square nautical miles, AAI offers air navigation services. In 2019–20, AAI handled 1314.23 thousand aircraft movements [International 156.0 & Domestic 1158.23], 159.59 million passenger movements [International 22.26 & Domestic 137.33], and 909.32 thousand MT of cargo movements [International 452.46 & Domestic 456.85].  Additionally, when all Indian airports are combined, they have handled 2587.05 thousand aircraft movements [International 431.85 & Domestic 2155.20], 341.05 million passenger movements [International 66.54 & Domestic 274.51], and 3328.63 thousand MT movements of cargo [International 2003.12 & Domestic 1325.51].

AAI Services

  • Passenger Facilities: Building, modifying, and managing passenger terminals; developing and managing cargo terminals; developing and maintaining apron infrastructure, such as runways, parallel taxiways, and apron; providing air traffic services; providing air traffic services; providing communication, navigation, and surveillance, which includes providing DVOR / DME, ILS, ATC radars, visual aids, etc.; and providing air transportation services. All of these tasks ensure the safe and secure operations of aircraft, passengers, and cargo in the nation.
  • Services for Air Navigation: AAI has been moving forward with its plans to switch to satellite-based communication, navigation, surveillance, and air traffic management in line with the worldwide strategy of modernizing air navigation infrastructure for seamless navigation across state and regional boundaries. In an effort to learn from their expertise, a number of memoranda and agreements of cooperation have been made with the US Federal Aviation Administration, US Trade & Development Agency, European Union, Air Services Australia, and the French Government Cooperative Projects and Studies. Through these initiatives, an increasing number of AAI executives are becoming familiar with the newest innovations in technology as well as cutting-edge practices and policies that are being implemented to enhance airport and air navigation service performance.
  • Security: The necessity of bolstering the security of crucial sites has become more apparent due to the ongoing security situation. Redesigning airport security was therefore imperative, not just to prevent future mishaps but also to rebuild the public's lost trust in the safety of air travel in general, following the events of 9/11. Several measures were implemented in this regard, such as the installation of premier security and surveillance systems, the most recent and cutting-edge X-ray baggage inspection systems, CCTV surveillance systems at important airports, and the deployment of CISF for airport security. At critical airports, smart cards for access control to key installations are also being studied as a way to support security personnel's efforts.
  • Aerodrome Infrastructure: In order to generate capacity ahead of demand in our efforts, the Airports Authority of India has established a fundamental approach to airport facility design. Numerous initiatives have been launched to improve and extend the runway, taxi track, and aprons at various airports in an effort to put this plan into action. In order to facilitate operations for Airbus-320/Boeing 737-800 category aircraft at all airports, a 7500 foot runway extension has been implemented.
