History of the Clemson University

Clemson University was established in 1889 with an endowment from a Philadelphia-born and European-educated engineer, Thomas Green Clemson. The Governor, John Peter Richardson signed a bill accepting Thomas Green’s gift in November 1889, which led to the establishment of Clemson Agricultural College.

In 1893, the Clemson Agricultural College started as an all-male, all-white military school with 446 students. With the admission of Harvey Gantt in 1963, Clemson University became the first traditionally white institution in South Carolina to end its policy of racial segregation. The College got its University status in 1964, thus becoming Clemson University, with academic offerings and research pursuits.

Required Exams to Procure Admission at Clemson University
