Hornby Scholarships: Eligibility, Important Dates and more

The Hornby Scholarship or the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship is given annually to teachers of the English language outside the United Kingdom. The Hornby scholarship for Indian students or those from other selected countries is for studying a master’s program in TESOL at the acclaimed University of Warwick. The Scholarship Trust was founded in 1961 by A.S. Hornby to propagate global teaching in English. Hornby was one of the pioneers behind the development of the Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary.

Eligibility 

The Hornby Scholarships eligibility criteria include the following: 

  • Three years of full-time teaching experience in the English language. 
  • Full university degree. 
  • English language proficiency (Band A) as per the following criteria- 
  1. IELTS- 6.5 (overall) with 6.5 in Writing and 6.0 in Speaking, Reading, and Listening. 
  2. TOEFL- 92 (overall) with 21 in Listening, 24 in Writing, 22 in Reading, and 23 in Speaking. 
  3. PTE- 62 (overall) with 62 in Writing and no section score lower than 51. 

Benefits 

The scholarship offers full funding for one year of study, including a monthly stipend for living and accommodation costs, tuition costs, costs of language tests, return airfare, and visa expenditure. 

Documents Required

  • Personal details (full name, contact details, email address, date of birth, nationality, and residence). 
  • Academic details (transcripts, awards, certificates, course details, name of the institution). 
  • Professional details (name of the organization, job position, type of work, date of employment, letter of resignation). 
  • A minimum of two references with details like the name of the referee, his/her personal details, email address, and professional relationship with the applicant. 
  • Supporting Statement in 1,500 words. This has to answer questions like the following: 
  1. Current English language teaching responsibilities and training delivered. 
  2. Is the applicant a trainee or a teacher? 
  3. The reasons behind studying the master’s program at the University of Warwick. 
  4. The professional skills and experience of the applicant. 
  5. If the scholarship is given to the applicant, how will it benefit her/him? 
  6. How will the individual share and spread their learning/knowledge after returning to his/her home country?

How to Apply? 

How to apply for Hornby Scholarships? One has to submit personal information, academic details, professional information, references, and supporting statements. These have to be provided with all supporting documentation. 

Important Dates

As an indicative example, for the scholarship period between October 2022 and September 2023, the deadline for applications is 12:00 (midday-UK time) on 31st October 2022. 

Selection 

Applications are taken from applicants hailing from countries on the DAC list. Shortlisted applicants will have to go through face-to-face or online interviews between mid-November and mid-December. If they are successful, the Hornby Trust trustee panel will determine the final selection. After provisional selection, candidates will have to apply for the program at the institution and showcase their level of English language proficiency. Upon the applicant’s acceptance into the program, the scholarship will be confirmed.
