How to write a LOR for German Universities? 

There is no prescribed format for writing a LOR for Germany. As a general rule, a good LOR may comprise the following pointers: 

• An introduction of the recommender or referee. 
• Relationship with the aspirant. 
• How the student carried out his/her studies under the recommender’s guidance?
• The student’s teamwork, learning aptitude, and any difference/contributions made. 
• What was the student’s approach toward the subject, and how did they take feedback and criticism? 
• The student’s evolution over time and passion for specific pursuits.
• Any noteworthy achievements of the student. 
• Student’s rating or rank amongst others in the same stream (whether in the top 10 or 20). 
• Any other information which may be relevant to the application. 

Things to keep in mind when writing a LOR

1. While writing a LOR for German universities, remember that the instructions vary across universities.  The recommender should follow these carefully. 
2. Avoid copying any LOR and maintain originality. 
3. The LOR should be submitted on the official letterhead of the institution to have higher weightage with the admissions committee. 
4. The LOR should be concise and to the point and carry a formal tone.
