All About Ontario Trillium Scholarship

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship or OTS is regulated by the Government of Ontario.  It was unveiled in 2010, with an aim of providing financial support to international students who were pursuing PhD programs. The scholarship funding ratio is 2/3 to 1/3 for the Government to institutions. There are 15 such scholarships given annually to eligible applicants.

Eligibility 

There are specific Ontario Trillium Scholarship eligibility criteria for students. This should be kept in mind for obtaining an Ontario Trillium Scholarship for Indian students or their global peers. 

Eligibility Criteria for Nominations: 

  • International student. 
  • English language proficiency. 
  • Current student at any postsecondary institution at the graduate/undergraduate level in Ontario. 
  • Should want to enroll in a full-time doctoral degree program. 
  • Should have A-average or 8.0 out of 10 in both full-time study years (equivalent of 80% in Ontario).

  • 40,000 CAD in funding every year for doctoral students. 
  • Renewal period of four years in total. 
  • Partial funding for PhD scholars for pursuing their programs at leading Ontario universities. 

Documents Required 

  • Application form.
  • Canadian study permit (valid). 
  • Updated resume/CV. 
  • Copy of all transcripts from university. 
  • OTS letter of support from a supervisor (authorized). 
  • List of awards and scholarships previously received by the applicant. 
  • English language proficiency proof (results of SAT, IELTS, or other tests). 
  • Letter of Recommendations. 
  • List of contributions made to research by the applicant. 
  • Proof of good health.

How to Apply? 

Thinking about how to apply for the Ontario Trillium Scholarship? Students should note that each institution will have a different procedure of applying for the scholarship. Nominations take place in the winter session and candidate admissions take place in the following winter/spring/fall term. 

Important Dates (timeline) 

Application deadlines vary across universities and usually begin from September, with nominations in the winter session. This means admission for eligible candidates in the coming fall, winter, or spring term. 

Selection 

The applicants are evaluated by selection committees on the basis of the programme eligibility criteria and merit.
