Public Universities in UK without IELTS

There are several public universities in the UK that accept not only IELTS but English language proficiency scores in several other tests. For example, the University of Sheffield accepts equivalent language tests for its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The University of Cambridge accepts TOEFL, C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency. The University of Bristol accepts TOEFL, PTE, and many other tests, including the NCUK English Test. The University of Warwick also accepts these tests, including TOEFL, PTE, CAE, CPE, and more. Imperial College London accepts TOEFL, PTE, LanguageCert International ESOL, Duolingo, and more.

Several leading public institutions in the UK offer scholarships. Some of the other general scholarships that you can apply for include the following: 

GREAT Scholarships

Students from India can apply for this scholarship to get £10,000 to cover tuition fees for a vast range of postgraduate courses with durations of one year. 

Commonwealth Scholarships

These are given to meritorious students from Commonwealth nations. The opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies every year is given to 800 learners. However, they should have undergraduate honors degrees with a minimum upper second class or 2:1. PhD aspirants should have a suitable master’s degree as well. 

Chevening Scholarships

These scholarships are given to individuals with stellar academic backgrounds and the potential to transform into future leaders. Full financial support is offered to recipients studying for master's degrees at any university in the UK. A stringent selection procedure takes place worldwide across British Embassies and High Commissions for granting the scholarship. It includes program/tuition costs, living costs, return flights to the UK, and access to various workshops, talks, networking events, volunteering opportunities, and internships. 

British Council Women in STEM Scholarships

Women researchers get an opportunity to finish their master's degree at any university in the UK with a one-year fully-funded scholarship. The benefits include tuition, travel, a stipend, visa, and health coverage fees. 

Global Wales Scholarships for International Students

These scholarships are available for Indian students. They are available in several categories for students

Institution-based scholarships may be based on academic merit and grades along with performance in extracurricular activities. There are sometimes subject-specific scholarship programs along with sanctuary or equal access scholarships in the form of waivers/maintenance awards/fee reductions for asylum seekers or refugees. It is available for students from low-income countries. The benefits include coverage for course fees, an annual grant for living costs, and one return airfare every year. 

University of Cambridge

The Cambridge International Scholarship is for all applicants except those from the UK or Ireland. The scholarship covers tuition fees, an immigration health surcharge, and an annual stipend for one individual. 

University of Bristol Think Big Undergraduate Scholarship- The value of the scholarship is £6,500 and £13,000 per year for undergraduate international students. The funds can only be used to cover tuition costs. There may also be a living cost bursary of £3,000 in the first year of study. 

The University of Warwick

The Warwick Undergraduate Global Excellence Scholarship is available annually for international students. There are full and half-free scholarships in addition to awards of £2,000.

Application Process of UK Public Universities

The application processes for public universities in the UK are usually the following (may vary across institutions) in the case of undergraduate programs. 

  • Choosing the institution and course. 
  • Register and apply via UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) by completing the forms and uploading all requisite documents. This applies to undergraduate students. Postgraduate applicants can apply online on the websites of universities/colleges as per their requirements.  
  • The next step is receiving an email notification from the institution about your place offer. UCAS applicants can track application statuses, too. Those getting unconditional offers can accept them right away, while those receiving conditional ones should meet the additional requirements without delay. Some may be required to take an interview in person or on the phone as well. 

For postgraduate programs, students can directly apply at the websites of their chosen universities. They can complete and submit their applications while uploading all necessary documents alongside. 

Eligibility Requirements

The eligibility requirements may vary across courses and institutions. Here is a sample list of requirements at the University of Manchester. 

Undergraduate applicants- 

  • A*A*A*-ABB for A-Levels or 34-41 points for IB, with 7, 7, 7-6, 5, 6 in HL (higher level) subjects. 
  • Alternatively, they will require 80-95% overall in their ISC/CBSE Standard XII examination for direct entry. Those getting overall 70% or more with at least 75% in Physics and Mathematics and 65% in English may also be considered for other programs. Those from State Boards should get 80-95% overall as well. 

Postgraduate applicants- 

  • Students should have completed a three-year undergraduate degree.
  • They should have obtained First Class from a recognized university with 60-80% overall. 
  • MBA programs may require up to three years of professional work experience. 

English language proficiency scores will also be required for applicants.
