The Alabama Legislature's Act 403 established AUM in 1967.
Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk, Jr. was named chief administrator and vice president of the just established institution in March 1968.
Nearly 600 students attended AUM when it first opened its doors in September 1969 in the former Alabama Extension Center on Bell Street, next to Maxwell AFB.
After two years, the university moved to a 500-acre (2.0 km2) campus located 7 miles (11 km) east of downtown Montgomery on the McLemore Plantation tract.
The Administration/Library building and Goodwyn Hall, which housed faculty offices and classrooms, were the campus's first two buildings.
