Southern Methodist University Admission Process & Documentation Required
Each applicant must provide the following application checklist:
- Application form and a non-refundable $60 application fee
- A personal essay
- Official high school transcript
- SAT or ACT scores(optional). The ACT recommended score is 6.5.
- A TOEFL score of 90 or a Duolingo English test score of 115.
- Counselor recommendation
- Teacher recommendation (optional)
- Extracurricular resume (optional)
For graduate admissions, all international applicants with English as their second language must complete a TOEFL or IELTS test.
For graduate admissions, different schools have different requirements; however, the general requirements are:
- The minimum TOEFL score is 80.
- The minimum IELTS score is 6.5.
- The minimum score for the TOEFL Essentials is 8.5.
- The minimum DET score is 110.
The Admission Process:
Step 1: Decide upon the application deadline
Applicants have two application deadlines:
November 1
- Early Action, non-binding
- Early Decision I, binding
January 15
- Regular Decision, non-binding
- Early Decision II, binding
Early Decision is a binding agreement in which if the students get admitted to SMU, they must withdraw all other applications and attend SMU. However, this is acceptable if the students have been offered sufficient financial assistance.
Early Action is a non-binding program. If the students get admitted to Early Action, they do not have to withdraw other applications. They can choose the school they want to attend.
Step 2: Decide which application method to go for
There are three application methods; applicants can pick any application form to apply to SMU.
- The Common Application: A common application platform allows students to apply to several colleges and universities worldwide.
- ApplyTexas: It allows students to apply to universities in Texas using a single application.
- Apply Coalition with SCOIR: Coalition application allows students to apply to different universities across the USA. With their collaboration with Scoir, the students can apply to different universities from their Scoir account. Scoir is a platform that provides students with different tools for application management.
Step 3: Review the application checklist.
You must check if you have all the required documents, such as:
- The high school transcript, and submit them via electronic services, such as Parchment, Naviance, or GreenLight. You can also submit it via your school official.
- Counselor recommendation in PDF
- Teacher recommendation in PDF
- Early Decision Agreement Form (if applying)
- Your SAT or ACT scores (optional)
- Official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) scores
- HomeSchool Supplement (if you were home-schooled) in PDF
Step 4: Submit the application
The last step is to apply alone, along with all the supporting documents.
