• The Graduate Studies Scholarship

One of the most competitive awards to aid students in their graduate studies is the Graduate Studies Scholarship. Graduate students selected by their department will receive a minimum of $1,000, not to exceed $3,000 for master's students or $5,000 for doctoral students, for the length of their studies, subject to funding availability and student eligibility.

In the fall and spring semesters, the scholarship will be awarded in $500 increments, with a maximum payout of $1,000 over a 12-month period. All out-of-state and foreign graduate programs that win the award are qualified for non-resident tuition waivers for the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

• Non-Resident Tuition Waiver

The non-resident tuition waiver at Lamar University is an exemption from the non-resident tuition and fee schedule. Nonresident tuition rates may not apply to students who receive competitive academic awards of $1,000 or more.

The scholarship must fulfil all institutional standards for competitive awards and adhere to all State of Texas regulations governing tuition rates and waivers in order to be eligible for this waiver.

• Continuing Cardinal Scholarship

The Continuing Cardinal Scholarship is available to current LU undergraduate students. This grant is exclusively available for on-campus programs and is given to students who apply for graduate school within two semesters of earning their bachelor's degree. Students who are selected will earn a total of $2,000, which can be divided between the spring/summer and fall/spring semesters, or paid in whole if the summer session begins.

Eligibility Criteria for Lamar University Scholarships

Scholarships for incoming freshmen are given out depending on SAT/ACT results, high school GPA, and rank. Transcripts must all be received before the document deadline. Regretfully, a student may not be eligible for more than one freshman scholarship at once. The lowest prize will be eliminated in this instance. 

On a competitive basis, students who are accepted into a graduate program at LU, maintain excellent academic standing, and register for a minimum of nine semester hours during the fall and spring terms, as well as six semester hours during the summer semester, are eligible to earn the graduate scholarship.

The Graduate Studies Scholarship is not available to graduate students enrolled in completely online, accelerated programs provided in association with Academic Partnerships.

How are scholarships awarded at Lamar University?

Every year, all new and continuing graduate students will be reviewed by the department that houses your program. Recipients will be chosen from among students who satisfy both the basic qualifying requirements and any extra departmental requirements.  Your award will be added to the myScholarships site by the department.

Every semester following the twelfth day of classes, the College of Graduate Studies will perform a compliance evaluation of scholarship winners and forward the findings to the departments. Future cycle awards should take the review's findings into account.

Only the fundamental qualifying requirements—such as enrolment and GPA [grade point average] requirements—will be included in this examination. The department or college will need to evaluate any needs that are at a higher level.
