What is MD and MS?

The full form of MD and MS are Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery. Students can pursue an MD, a three-year postgraduate degree, after finishing an MBBS program. In nonsurgical specialties, an MD is recognized following three years of training. Given that MD is a postgraduate degree, candidates must hold an MBBS degree in order to be considered for the course.

The Union governmental Service Commission (UPSC) administers the Joint Medical Services Exam each year in order to hire these doctors into a variety of governmental agencies.  In India, a postgraduate degree program called the Master of Surgery, or MS degree, offers thorough knowledge and expertise in surgical training. The goal of the Master of Surgery program is to give students comprehensive understanding and useful abilities in patient care, surgical methods, and research. The Master of Surgery degree program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training, research projects, clinical rotations, and theoretical seminars.

Differences Between MD and MS

For Indian doctors to succeed in the medical field after completing their MBBS degree, specialization has become essential. The completion of specialization does, however, present a few notable contradictions. After completing your MBBS, you can improve your future employment prospects and pay by pursuing an MS or MD degree.

Demand: It goes without saying that you have more demand in the healthcare industry as a post-graduate medical expert. Any patient with a health issue relating to dermatology would not want to see an MBBS graduate. They would look for a doctorate-holding specialist.

Career Prospect: Even though MBBS offers good job chances, you still require specialized knowledge in a certain area. You will succeed in the healthcare sector even if you are merely an MBBS graduate. On the other hand, you acquire the best diagnosing abilities, confidence, responsibility, and improved communication skills with in-depth knowledge in the field, such as an MS in OBG.

Salary: Additionally, there is a significant disparity in the salary range. An MBBS graduate may receive INR 30,000 to something more per month, typically up to INR 1 Lakh, much like in most other fields. On the other hand, an MD in India makes between INR 2 and 20 lakhs, while an MS in India makes between INR 4 and 35 lakhs.

The optimal course will actually depend on your ability, interests, and talents. When comparing MDs and MSs or fluctuating between them, you should take things like talents and future professional opportunities into account.

Following MBBS, pursuing an MS may require you to work with human tissue and blood frequently. If you cannot tolerate cuts and excessive bleeding, do not consider MS after MBBS.

Likewise, the optimum path to becoming a general practitioner in India is an MD. As a specialist, you would be responsible for writing prescriptions for patients' pharmaceuticals and medications. You wouldn't have to deal with machinery or equipment very frequently in this line of work, and you would have direct patient contact.

In India, the MD program is a post-MBBS program that aids in deepening your understanding in a particular area of medicine. You will gain the capacity to diagnose patients more precisely through this study, enabling you to provide them with the appropriate care at the appropriate time. The following specializations are included in this field:

  • MD Paediatrics
  • MD General Medicine
  • MD Pathology
  • MD Radiology
  • MD Cardiology

Another post-MBBS education that aids in gaining in-depth surgical knowledge is MS after MBBS. Patient care, conferences, clinical talks, practical clinical experience, and supervised surgery are all included in this field. The following specialties are included in an MS following an MBBS:

  • MS Orthopaedics
  • MS OBG
  • MS Ophthalmology
  • MS ENT
