GSI Full Form- Geological Survey of India

What is GSI? The full form of GSI is Geological Survey of India. 

The Geological Survey of India, founded in 1851, set out on a mission to search for and evaluate the nation's coal and other natural resources through regional exploration.  

Over the course of its 160-year existence, GSI has expanded into a wide range of geoscientific endeavours and made invaluable contributions to the field of geosciences. 

Following independence, GSI has significantly expanded its baseline surveys and mineral exploration efforts to meet the growing demands of diverse stakeholders and maintain the momentum of the country's economic development. 

It has grown over time into a vast library of priceless geoscientific data that is used in many of the nation's development sectors and has earned the reputation as a worldwide geoscientific organisation. 

Functions and Key Aspects of GSI

• The creation and updating of national geoscientific data, the evaluation of mineral resources, airborne and marine surveys, the performance of numerous geotechnical,  glaciology, geoenvironmental, and natural hazards studies, seismotectonics, and other studies, as well as the promotion of fundamental research studies, are the main responsibilities of GSI. 
• GSI made a significant contribution and continued to be relevant in the national context in all of the country's developing industries, including the coal, steel, cement, metals/minerals, and power sectors.
• The results of GSI's work have enormous societal worth and are pertinent from a worldwide viewpoint, utilising cutting-edge approaches and state-of-the-art technologies. 
• Since GSI's annual programs and operations are closely tied to achieving the public good, they are significant from a national standpoint. 

With six regional offices, GSI is headquartered in Kolkata. A High Powered Committee (HPC) was established by the Union Cabinet to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Geological Survey of India's operations and determine the agency's ability to address future issues while considering the organisation's technological and human resource capacities.
